Evidence Based Practice
What current research shows…
Effectiveness of acupuncture as adjunctive therapy in osteoarthritis of the knee. A randomized, controlled trial. Annals of Int. Medicine, 2004; 141: 901-910. Berman, BM, Lao, L., Langenberg, P., Lee, WL., Gilpin, AMK.
• Largest controlled phase III clinical trial shows acupuncture to be effective in the treatment of osteoarthritis of the knee
• 570 participants over the age of 50 with x-ray evidence of osteophyte formation at the tibiofemoral joint; underwent 25 treatments of acupuncture over a period of 6 months, starting with 2 treatments a week and tapering to monthly treatments
• outcome measures included the Western Ontario and McMaster University Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC) pain and function scores and the 36-item Short Form Health Survey (SF-36) physical component
• statistically significant improvement over time in both outcome measures with a 40% decrease from baseline in the WOMAC pain score and a 40% improvement in function

What our patients say…

“After months of sleepless nights due to back, knee and foot pain, I was referred for physiotherapy at the Physical Edge. After only a few sessions of acupuncture and exercises, I was able to sleep and return to my regular routine of activities. Doctors were only offering pain medication. My knee replacement surgery has been postponed indefinitely and I am able to enjoy my active life once again.”
