Shin Splints

Shin Splints (Medial Tibial Stress Syndrome)

Anatomy and Biomechanics

Shin splints refer to pain along the inner edge of the shin bone (tibia) caused by repetitive stress on the bone and surrounding muscles.

This condition often develops when athletes increase training intensity too quickly, run on hard surfaces, or have biomechanical issues in the feet or legs.

Signs and Symptoms

Common symptoms include:

  • Pain along the inside of the shin

  • Tenderness when pressing along the tibia

  • Pain during or after running

  • Mild swelling in the lower leg

How Physiotherapy Helps

Physiotherapy helps reduce stress on the shin and improve tissue tolerance.

Treatment may include:

  • Strengthening the calf and foot muscles

  • Running technique assessment

  • Load management and training modification

  • Mobility exercises for the ankle and foot
