Meniscus Injuries

Meniscus Injuries

Anatomy and Biomechanics

The meniscus is a C-shaped piece of cartilage in the knee that acts as a shock absorber between the femur and tibia. Each knee contains two menisci that help distribute forces across the joint and improve stability.

Meniscus injuries commonly occur during twisting or pivoting movements, especially when the knee is bent.

Signs and Symptoms

Symptoms may include:

  • Pain along the joint line of the knee

  • Swelling in the knee

  • Clicking, catching, or locking sensations

  • Pain with squatting or twisting

  • Stiffness and limited knee movement

How Physiotherapy Helps

Many meniscus injuries respond well to conservative physiotherapy treatment.

Rehabilitation focuses on:

  • Reducing pain and swelling

  • Restoring knee mobility

  • Strengthening surrounding muscles

  • Improving knee stability and movement mechanics

  • Gradual return to physical activity
