Achilles Tendon Injuries

Anatomy and Biomechanics

The Achilles tendon connects the calf muscles to the heel bone and allows the foot to push off the ground during walking and running.

Overuse, sudden increases in activity, or tight calf muscles can overload the tendon.

Signs and Symptoms

  • Pain or stiffness in the back of the heel

  • Morning stiffness in the tendon

  • Pain during running or jumping

  • Tenderness along the Achilles tendon

How Physiotherapy Helps

Research shows progressive strengthening exercises are the most effective treatment.

Physiotherapy may include:

  • Calf strengthening and tendon loading programs

  • Manual therapy

  • Mobility work for the ankle

  • Gradual return-to-running programs
