Headaches (Cervicogenic Headaches)

Anatomy and Biomechanics

Cervicogenic headaches originate from dysfunction in the neck joints or muscles, which can refer pain to the head. 
 

Signs and Symptoms

  • headache starting in the neck

  • unilateral (one-sided) headaches

  • non-throbbing

  • pain on one side of the head

  • neck stiffness

How Physiotherapy Helps

Physiotherapy can reduce headaches through:

  • manual therapy for neck joints

  • posture correction

  • strengthening neck stabilizing muscles

Other Types of Headaches 

Other types of headaches include tension headaches and migraine headaches. Many people present with a combination of more than one type of headache which your physiotherapist can help you understand and manage. 

Tension headaches: 

  • Bilateral (both sides) headaches 

  • Typically across the forehead​

  • Can have associated tenderness over muscles of the head/face

  • Caused by: lack of sleep, dehydration, hormones, stress, anxiety, depression, malnutrition

Migraine Headaches: 

  • ​Unilateral (one-sided) headaches

  • Commonly across the forehead and can switch sides

  • Can be associated with neck pain

  • Cause is largely not understood
