What to Expect at Your First Pelvic Floor Physiotherapy Appointment with Alyson

Conversation & History
Your physiotherapist will begin by asking about your symptoms, health history, lifestyle, and goals. This may include questions about bladder, bowel, sexual health, pregnancies, surgeries, or pelvic pain.
Education
You’ll learn about how the pelvic floor works, how it relates to your symptoms, and what treatment options may help. Many people find this part very empowering and gives them a lot of clarity and reassurance.
Assessment
Depending on your comfort level, your therapist may assess:
Posture, breathing, and movement patterns
Core, hip, and back strength and flexibility
Pelvic floor muscles, which may include an internal exam (vaginal or rectal). This is always explained beforehand, only done with your consent, and can be declined. Alternatives will be offered if you prefer not to have an internal exam.
Treatment Plan
Your physiotherapist will work with you to create a personalized plan. This may include:
Exercises for pelvic floor coordination, relaxation, or strengthening
Breathing and posture training
Manual therapy (gentle hands-on techniques)
Education on bladder and bowel habits, daily activity modifications, or lifestyle strategies
Questions & Comfort
You’ll always have the chance to ask questions. Your comfort and consent are the top priority—everything will be explained before it happens.
